EchoFrame doesn't merely blur a photo and hope. It refuses to send it until someone has walked to the place. Here is exactly what happens when someone tries to open a memory from too far away.
How a photo opens
There is no public URL to guess, share or scrape, not even for a public echo. Every image anyone sees is opened through a short-lived link the server signs on the spot.
Someone who hasn't been there asks for the photo, and the server refuses. The app isn't merely hiding it behind a blur. The bytes are never sent.
Within 30m, your phone passes a distance check the database runs itself. It records the reveal, and only then is a link minted. And that is all it does. There is no gallery of unlocked echoes: you went, you saw it, and it stays at the place for whoever comes next.
The matching runs on your phone, not on our servers. Your position is never streamed to us, and the database query that finds echoes near you is declared read-only, so it cannot record where you looked even by accident. Set quiet hours and it stays silent. The only places EchoFrame keeps are the ones you left a memory, and the ones you walked to and unlocked.
Nothing the app sends can simply declare a reveal. Only the database can record one, and only after running its own distance check. That's what makes the walk real rather than polite.
Public to whoever passes, or a private circle. Remove or block someone and they lose the photo, including one they had already unlocked, and including the echo's coordinates.
The moment you report something it disappears from your map, before any human sees it. Enough reports from people who actually walked there and it hides itself for everyone while we look.
Every phone reports its own GPS, so a modified app could claim to be somewhere it isn't. The server check stops casual couch-browsing; it is not device attestation, and we won't pretend it is. We'd rather you hear that from us.

You're always in control of each echo: public to anyone who passes by, or inside a private circle you choose. EchoFrame doesn't follow you around. Your position is never streamed to us, there is no table of your movements, and the query that finds echoes near you is declared read-only, so it cannot log where you looked even by accident. Nearby alerts happen on your phone, not by us watching. What we do keep is the places you acted on: echoes you left, and echoes you walked to and unlocked. That second one is the check that stops a photo being handed to someone who never made the walk. Photos are stored privately and are only ever served through short-lived links the server signs after a distance check. One honest caveat: every phone reports its own GPS, so a modified app could claim to be somewhere it isn't. That check stops casual browsing from the couch; it isn't device attestation, and we'd rather say so than pretend.
Report it and it vanishes from your map immediately, before anyone else looks at it. You can block anyone, and blocking is enforced in the database: they lose your echoes, your coordinates and your photos, including ones they'd already unlocked. Once enough of the people who actually walked to a photo report it, it hides itself automatically while we review. We aim to look at every report within 24 hours, and we remove anything that breaks the rules. We don't pre-screen photos with a machine, so we depend on reports. That's exactly why reporting is one tap and takes effect instantly.
